TEMPORARY DUTY
People who move frequently for their jobs, apartment renters, and college students are among the many people who need interior design ideas that are affordable, easy to uninstall, and versatile. We asked Brianne Beninati for some tips on designing for short-term residences.
Upgrade little things that make
a big difference. Changing an ugly light fixture or replacing hardware are among the changes that can be made affordably and will give more personality to a home. The pieces that came with the rental can be put in a closet or the garage until you move out.
Have some grace with your space.
“Understand that it’s temporary, and you’re not going to be able to change everything,” says Beninati. “It doesn’t need to be magazine- worthy all of the time.”
Paint. If you are allowed to paint, do it, even if it’s just a wall. Giving a room an accent wall can really change the feeling of a space, and make it feel more homey.
Invest in pieces that are versatile. Beninati has a rug that in one home, was in her office, but in another worked well in her dining room. By purchasing items that coordinate and flow together from room to room, or that can be used for different solutions, you’ll be able to use them more interchangeably.
A comfy sofa is everything. “A neutral, comfortable couch is my base,” says Beninati.
Don’t overlook rugs. Area rugs – whether over institutional flooring or wall-to-wall carpet—can tie together a space and customize it.
