Conceptual artist Stephen Wilson began his hands-on education in textile- based techniques with a freelance career in NewYork’s garment industry in the 1990s. His métier quickly grew to a mixed-media practice employing digitized embroidery, painting, 3D printing, photography, sculpture and more. His pieces often contain millions of embroidery stitches and take hundreds of hours to create. From his studio in Charlotte, North Carolina — a former mill town and textiles hub — Wilson aims to evoke questions about appropriation, conspicuous consumption and brand worship.
