Burning smell when furnace first turned on. Circuit breaker trips repeatedly. Potential Cause Gas leak. Circuit breaker tripped. Furnace door at unit not closed tightly. Thermostat improperly set. Furnace switch off or furnace fuses burned out. Broken igniter. Air distribution unbalanced. Dirty air filter. Improper use of thermostat. Breaker tripped, faulty wiring, or equipment. Outside unit obstructed by bushes, leaves, etc. Defective drain coil. Lack of moisture in air. Excess humidity in home. Accumulated dust on electrical coils. Various causes. Potential Solution Evacuate home and Call Utility Company. Reset circuit breaker. Close door on unit securely. Reset thermostat. Turn on fan switch and replace burned out fuse. Call Heating Contractor. Adjust air registers. Clear obstructions away from registers. Clean or replace air filter as necessary. Set thermostat temperature at one setting and leave it. Check and reset breaker. Contact HVAC contractor. Clear obstructions from top and sides of unit. Call HVAC Contractor. Install humidifier. Lower humidifier setting. Use exhaust fans. Normal. Happens once each year. Call Heating Contractor. HVAC System does not operate. Circuit breaker tripped.
