                Section 9 | Home Care & Maintenance   ELECTRICAL Problem Complete power failure. Electrical outlets not working. GFI switches not operating. Light fixture not working. Appliance does not work. Smoke alarm goes off when smoke is not present. EXTERIOR FINISHES Problem Nicks or deep depressions in wood siding. Siding has a dirty, streaked appearance. Efflorescence on masonry finishes. Cracks in masonry finish. Gaps at joints in wood trim. Appearance of a sandblasted finish. Paint fades on south side of house. Cracking/peeling of painted surfaces. Potential Cause Main breaker tripped. Electrical outage. Outlet is a switched outlet or circuit breaker is tripped. GFI receptacle or circuit breaker is tripped. Switch is off or bulb is burned out. Circuit breaker tripped or appliance broken. Dust or dirt trapped in smoke alarm. Potential Cause Abuse or accidents. Mildew or fungus growth. Crystallized soluble salts. Normal home settlement. Normal caulk and filler shrinkage. High wind with sand and dirt. Intense sunlight. Normal aging and weathering. Potential Solution Reset main breaker or call power company. Turn on wall switch. Check and reset breaker. Reset GFI. Check and reset circuit breaker. Turn on switch. Turn off power and replace bulb. Reset circuit breaker. If problem persists, see appliance manual. Clean or vacuum smoke alarm. Potential Solution Caulk and repair as soon as possible. Apply commercial mildew cleaner following manufacturer’s directions. If desired, scrub with vinegar and water and a stiff brush. Seal cracks with a flexible masonry or concrete caulk. Re-caulk or fill. Clean and sand surface. Prime and paint, if applicable. Normal maintenance. Repaint wall. Clean and sand surface, then prime and repaint.              GFI keeps tripping.    GFI circuit overloaded.    Do not overload GFI circuit with appliances. Check for short or ground in appliance.   Recessed can light turns on or off by itself.    Light fixture is overheating.    Fixture designed to shut down to avoid overheating. Use lower wattage bulb. Check label on fixture for proper wattage.
