“People have come to expect something different here.
Often they say they just come in for inspiration,” says Thigpen. Knowing that 70 percent of his weekend crowd will be back next week, constant change keeps displays fresh. Cross-product vignettes of plants, pots and statuary are the heartbeat of the gallery, but the Thigpens make use of every inch of space, hanging things from the 18’ ceilings, placing paintings and photographs on the walls, arranging items on tables and on
the floor. “People have to go through three times, to look high, middle and low to see it all,” he says. The lush greenery of
300 house plants, soft music and trickling fountains create
a welcoming ambiance.
“I do know plants and what I hope
to sell is success. When someone buys something, plants it, and it flourishes, I know they’ll come back.”
CHARLIE THIGPEN
Finding ways to reach a diverse audience
and offering inspiration
Postings to 8,000 plus Facebook followers invite customers
back to see new products that change with the season. There are more plants in the spring, more birdbaths, wind chimes and water features in the summer, and more candles, jewelry and handmade gifts for the holidays, all wrapped in their signature burlap.
Equally valued by customers is Thigpen’s gardening knowledge and encouragement. The gallery hosts garden club presentations and classes and there’s always free advice. “I do know plants and what I hope to sell is success. When someone buys something, plants it, and it flourishes, I know they’ll come back,” he says.
He’s proud of the business that he’s grown and advises others, “Make sure your heart is in it and dare to be different.” ■
