Start small and grow. J.P. Herring, Teresa Thibault and
Lisa Kelechava all say their companies have low minimum order requirements to give independent retailers a chance to test custom product with relatively little risk.
Use a store-specific ornament to foster collecting. Make it happen by dating custom ornaments, offering customers the chance
to pre-order and advertising the new piece. Also, spotlight the ornament with its own in-store display and signage so customers really get the “exclusivity” message.
For city or region-specific custom product, cross-merchandise. Herring noted a retailer in Colorado who does a great business with a state flag ornament design. It’s cross merchandised with other product with the flag’s distinctive colors. The display not only draws the eye, iit often leads customers to grab more than just an ornament.
