Q As one project evolved into the next, when did you realize you have a “lifestyle brand”?
A I’m not sure I’ve realized it yet! Honestly, it’s not something I really think about. I have read “lifestyle maven”, etc. in articles written about my businesses,
but it’s really a gut instinct thing with me. I choose projects I think I will enjoy and that I think I can contribute to. I say no to a LOT of things, not just because I don’t have the time to pursue everything
that comes my way, but also because I can’t see the point in being involved in any venture that I don’t love 100 percent I feel very lucky to have that kind of freedom.
Q Your guests became an integral part of your cooking show. How did you convince people to join you on set? What are your must-haves for a recipe?
A My friends and family would tell you that they are never asked, they’re told! Ha! That’s kind of true. I am lucky
to have a lot of wonderful people in my life, who just say yes. My sister, in particular, is my favorite guest on my show because we grew up in the same kitchen, so it’s just easy to be together in the kitchen, and also because while I’m a little more outspoken and loud than she is, she’s always up for whatever challenge I give her, or whatever character or costume I come up with for her. One of my favorite episodes was a tribute we did to the great Julia Child. We dressed in retro ’50s clothing and had the best time, making classic Julia dishes.
I don’t really have any “must-haves” for a recipe, other than it has to be simple. I don’t want to make something on TV that people watching can’t make at home. I don’t want to include a crazy ingredient that they can’t find
in their local grocery store. Our mom always said simple is best, and she was right.
Q What is your favorite thing to have someone else cook for you?
A If someone is willing to cook for me, I’m not going to ever complain about what they cook! I love anything on the grill, and I don’t love to grill, so when my husband cooks burgers or steaks on the grill, I’m a happy camper.
Q Is there anything else on your to-do list that you’d like to pursue?
A Yes! So many things! When I started in the music business, I signed a record deal where I didn’t own my masters and I basically worked for someone else.
That business model changed for me several years ago, and now I own my music, which is big for me.
I would love to see the licensing deals I have with my businesses evolve into partnerships. There are SO many things I’d like to be involved in. I want
to get into tabletop, candles, linens. I want to make really good undergarments for real women. I want, I want, I want...yep. There’s a lot I want to do. ■

How would you define your
personal style? How does that
influence your products?
I think overall my personal style is casual. I love to
dress up and go to awards shows in jewels and sparkly gowns, but when I’m home, I am most comfortable in my favorite jeans and a comfy sweatshirt. If I think about my furniture and accessories collections, I think there’s a little something for everyone. What I love about my favorite couch at home, (which is a TY sectional) is that it’s structured and beautiful, so it doesn’t look slouchy, but it is so comfortable to sit on, or lounge on to read my book in the mornings. It’s beautiful and comfortable. We’ve all been to those homes where everything was
so gorgeous and fancy that we were afraid to sit on the furniture. I never want anything I’m associated with to feel that way. And I indulge my “sparkly” side with some of my home accessories items. There’s something for everyone in the furniture lines and the home accessories lines.
Q Are you a shopper? How has being on the other side of retail affected your perspective?
A I am a shopper. I am always shopping with an eye for what the next trend might be, what colors are popping up, and also looking at items I love and thinking about how to do them differently or better in my own line.
I don’t think I just “shop” anymore!
